Study at the United World College of South East Asia in Singapore

The United World College of South East Asia (UWCSEA) is a member of the United World College (UWC) movement which comprises 13 non-profit colleges around the world. The emphasis is upon service, cultural and political sensitivity and all round achievement in both the academic and activity areas.

UWCSEA offers a challenging, holistic education with an emphasis on academic achievement, service to others, environmental stewardship, teamwork and leadership. A defining characteristic of the curriculum is the way the values are actively integrated into every aspect of the College programmes. At the core is the College’s mission to educate individuals to take responsibility for shaping a better world.

There are two UWCSEA campuses – Dover and East. Dover Campus has just over 2,900 students from more than 60 nationalities and educates students from Kindergarten 1 to Grade 12 (ages 4 to 18). The five schools are the Infant School (K1 to Grade 1), Junior School (Grade 2 to Grade 5), Middle School (Grades 6 to 8), Upper School (Grades 9 to 10) and Senior School (Grades 11 to 12).

The East Campus Primary School currently educates 500 students from Kindergarten 1 to Grade 5 in Ang Mo Kio. In August 2010 Kindergarten 1 to Grade 1 will relocate to the purpose-built school in Tampines. The Ang Mo Kio campus will then accommodate Grades 2 to 6 in 2010, during which UWCSEA East will provide 900 places across both campuses. In 2011, Grades 2 to 6 will relocate from Ang Mo Kio to the fully-completed Tampines campus. Joined by an intake of students in Grades 7 to 11, the population will swell to a maximum of 1,500. By 2015, UWCSEA East at Tampines will offer places to over 2,500 Kindergarten 1 to Grade 12 students, including 120 boarders.

The Infant and Junior Schools follow the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP), whilst the Middle School follows the IB Learner Profile while delivering a UWCSEA-designed curriculum. Grade 9 and 10 take the two-year IGCSE course, and the IB Diploma is offered in Grades 11 and 12. Dover Campus is one of the world’s largest IB Diploma schools and for over 26 years students have achieved superb exam results. In May 2009 98% of candidates achieved the IB diploma, with an average diploma point score an excellent 33 points and 24% achieved 40 or more points.

UWCSEA provides a challenging, holistic education with an emphasis on academic achievement, service to others, teamwork and leadership. Students are encouraged to participate in activities outside the curriculum including sports, music, drama and social service options.

One vital aspect of a UWCSEA education is service, and all students participate in age-appropriate service activities in the College, in Singapore and in the developing world via College’s unique Global Concerns programme. The Global Concerns programme educates students about global issues and through it students are introduced to concepts of leadership and organization and are encouraged to establish their own initiatives. Students’ efforts have resulted in the building of schools in Swaziland, Nepal and Indonesia.

Students develop character and learning through challenges, both inside and outside the classroom and from Grade 3 all students participate in annual class expeditions outside Singapore. From Taman Negara in Malaysia to sea kayaking in Tioman, students gain new skills whilst enjoying the opportunity to bond with their classmates.

Dover Campus is set on 11 hectares (27 acres) in a central area of Singapore and has extensive new facilities. There are 265 full- and part- time teachers from 25 nationalities, and boarding facilities for over 190 students aged 11 to 18.

The new, purpose-designed facility under construction in Tampines for the East Campus will accommodate over 2,500 students by 2015. Currently, the East Campus has over 50 full and part time teaching staff.
